The Beauty Low Down
Did you know that makeup products expire?
On the back of most makeup products there is a logo of an open compact with a number inside. That logo serves as the products expiration date. For example, if your powder has the number 24 inside the logo, then your powder is good for up to 24 months after opening.
A great makeup habit to adopt is cleaning out your makeup bag at the change of each season. Makeup bags and old makeup are breeding grounds for bad bacteria. It’s a great idea to dump your makeup bag and throw it in the wash every few weeks. This small step can help prevent pesky breakouts.
Generally speaking, if a product smells sour or spoiled toss it no matter how long you’ve had it. Here is a table of products and shelf life when stored under favorable conditions.
Mascara – 3 months
Liquid Foundation and Concealer – 6-12 months
Lipstick – 2 years
Lip-gloss – 1year
Nail Polish – 1-2 years
Powder – 2 years
Eye shadow 2 years
Blush – 2years
Fragrance -8/10 years
Lotion – 2 years
TIP ALERT: Not too thrilled about tossing gently used products? If you’re MAC girl, you can take six of your empty MAC products back to any MAC store or counter for a free lipglass, eye shadow, or lipstick.
